Beholding Christ Through the Women Who Witnessed His Work
As Easter approaches, we want to slow down and look again at Jesus.
The weeks leading up to the cross and resurrection are filled with familiar stories, but sometimes we move through them quickly. This year, CBA Women wanted to pause and behold Christ through the eyes of women who encountered Him during His earthly ministry.
Throughout the Gospels and the early church, women appear again and again in the story of redemption. Some followed Jesus faithfully as He traveled and taught. Some encountered Him in moments of deep need or personal transformation. Some stood near the cross when others had fled. Some were the first to witness the empty tomb.
Their stories reveal something beautiful about who Jesus is.
Mary of Bethany shows us that Jesus is worthy of costly worship. The women who supported His ministry remind us that quiet service matters deeply in the Kingdom of God. Martha demonstrates faith in the middle of grief and confusion. The woman at the well shows how Jesus meets us in the parts of our story we would rather hide and transforms them into testimony.
Even in the final hours before the cross, women appear in the Gospel narrative. The daughters of Jerusalem mourned as Jesus walked toward Calvary. Mary, His mother, watched the suffering of the Son she had once held as a child. The women who followed Him from Galilee stayed near the tomb when hope seemed lost.
And then, on the first morning of resurrection, it was Mary Magdalene who heard Jesus speak her name and became the first to proclaim, “I have seen the Lord.”
These women remind us that following Jesus is not always tidy or easy. Sometimes it looks like worship that others do not understand. Sometimes it looks like faith in the middle of grief. Sometimes it looks like quiet service, honest testimony, or simply staying close when everything feels confusing.
But in every story, the same truth rises to the surface.
Jesus is worthy.
He is worthy of our worship.
He is worthy of our faith.
He is worthy of our story.
He is worthy of our tears, our service, and our obedience.
This devotional was written by women from churches across the Charleston Baptist Association. Each reflection invites us to open Scripture, consider the lives of these women, and see more clearly the beauty and worth of Christ.
Our prayer is that these reflections would encourage you to slow down, sit with Scripture, and behold Jesus again this Easter season.
Whether you have walked with Him for many years or are just beginning to explore faith, we hope this devotional helps you see Him more clearly and respond with worship.
